Vodafone Idea taps 1.6Tbps optics for 5G surge

What happened

Vodafone Idea has deployed Ciena’s WaveLogic 6 Extreme optical technology to upgrade its transport network capacity across India.

According to the company’s announcement, the deployment enables up to 1.6Tbps per wavelength, significantly increasing data throughput over existing fibre infrastructure. This allows the operator to scale capacity without extensive new fibre investment, a critical advantage in cost-sensitive markets.

WaveLogic 6 Extreme represents Ciena’s latest generation of coherent optics, designed for high-capacity transport networks. The platform supports not only terabit-scale transmission but also improved spectral efficiency and power efficiency compared to previous generations. Industry data shows it can deliver around 15% higher spectral efficiency and up to 50% reduction in power per bit compared with earlier 800G technologies .

The deployment comes as Vodafone Idea faces increasing demand from mobile data, enterprise services and cloud-based applications. Strengthening the optical transport layer is essential to support both existing 4G traffic and the continued rollout of 5G services.

Why it’s important

The shift to 1.6Tbps wavelengths signals a structural upgrade in telecom networks, moving from 400G/800G systems into the era of terabit-scale transport.

Crucially, this is not just about speed. Moving from 800G to 1.6Tbps effectively doubles fibre wavelength capacity while lowering cost per bit, enabling operators to scale more efficiently without proportional capital expenditure. This is particularly relevant for Vodafone Idea, which must balance network investment with financial constraints.

At an industry level, such upgrades reflect a broader trend: telecom networks are evolving into ultra-high-capacity infrastructure to support exponential data growth. Coherent optical technologies like WaveLogic 6 are widely seen as foundational to this transition, enabling scalable backbone networks for 5G, cloud and AI-driven traffic.

The implication is clear. As data demand continues to rise, competitive advantage will increasingly depend on how efficiently operators can upgrade their transport networks. Vodafone Idea’s move highlights a shift towards capacity-led network strategy, where smarter infrastructure—not just more infrastructure—defines growth.
