  • UK-based Virtus Data Centres has named Adam Eaton as its new Chief Executive Officer as the company steps up expansion across the UK and Europe.
  • Eaton brings more than 20 years of data centre, cloud and managed services experience, signalling leadership continuity amid increasing demand for digital infrastructure.

What happened: Virtus elevates veteran executive to lead growth phase

Virtus Data Centres, one of the UK’s largest data centre operators, has appointed Adam Eaton as its new Chief Executive Officer with immediate effect. The leadership change formalises a transition from interim management, with Thomas Ee of parent company ST Telemedia Global Data Centres having held the position for the past nine months.

Eaton joins Virtus after a more than 20-year career in the data centre, cloud and managed services sectors, most recently serving as Executive Group Director for Europe at Global Switch, where he oversaw operations in key European markets including Frankfurt, London, Amsterdam, Paris and Madrid. His experience in scaling complex infrastructure and driving performance underpins Virtus’s ambition to build on its existing footprint while responding to evolving customer needs.

Bruno Lopez, President and Group CEO of STT GDC and Chairman at Virtus Data Centres, said the company was “delighted” to welcome Eaton at a time of continued expansion. He emphasised that Eaton’s insights, operational leadership and stakeholder management skills make him well-placed to guide Virtus into its next stage of growth.

Virtus operates a portfolio of data centres across key UK and European markets and is backed by ST Telemedia Global Data Centres (STT GDC) along with a significant minority investment from Macquarie Asset Management. The company has prioritised high-efficiency, sustainable facilities that cater to cloud providers, enterprises and digital platforms amid surging demand for reliable digital infrastructure.

Why it’s important

Eaton’s appointment underscores the data centre industry’s focus on strong leadership as demand for digital infrastructure accelerates, driven by cloud computing, artificial intelligence and enterprise digital transformation. Leadership with experience across multiple geographies and technical competencies can be a significant advantage in navigating market pressures such as rising power costs, sustainability expectations and planning constraints.

Virtus’s growth trajectory reflects broader trends consolidation in the European data centre market, where operators seek to expand capacity and service offerings to meet diverse customer requirements while managing operational risks. The leadership change signals Virtus’s intent to maintain momentum in this competitive environment and continue delivering resilient and efficient infrastructure solutions.
