What happened: Verizon introduces satellite texting for Android users

Verizon has launched satellite messaging for Google Pixel 9 and Samsung Galaxy S25 users, extending communication capabilities in areas with no cellular coverage. Previously, these Android devices could only connect to emergency services via satellite, but they can now send texts to any contact, regardless of their device or carrier.

The rollout of this service has already begun and will be completed within two weeks. Verizon is not alone in enhancing satellite communication—T-Mobile has partnered with Starlink for satellite-based texting, currently in beta testing. T-Mobile users on the Go5G Next plan will receive the service at no additional cost, while others can add it for $15 per month. Meanwhile, AT&T has teamed up with AST SpaceMobile, recently demonstrating a satellite-based video call.

Why it’s important

Satellite messaging enhances connectivity in remote areas, addressing gaps in traditional networks. As mobile carriers integrate satellite technology, users gain greater reliability, particularly in emergencies or rural locations.

The development also signals growing competition in satellite communication. Verizon, T-Mobile, and AT&T are racing to expand coverage and improve services. The collaboration between mobile operators and satellite providers could lead to future advancements, such as photo sharing, internet browsing, and voice calls over satellite networks.
