  • Telia has achieved nationwide 5G coverage, reaching 99% of Norway’s population in just four years, with 1.6 million 5G devices now connected to its network.
  • The expansion has led to a 375% increase in average download speeds and a 900% rise in mobile data usage, aligning with Norway’s vision to become the most digitalised country by 2030.

What happened: Telia expands nationwide 5G coverage, supporting Norway’s digitalisation goals

Telia has achieved nationwide 5G coverage in Norway, reaching 99% of the population just four years after launching its first 5G base stations in Lillestrøm. The company’s network now supports 1.6 million 5G-enabled devices, with many users relying solely on 5G wireless broadband for their internet access. The integration of 5G and upgraded 4G networks has significantly enhanced performance, increasing average download speeds by 375% and boosting mobile data usage by 900% since 2019. In addition to expanding 5G coverage, Telia has implemented a private 5G network for the Norwegian armed forces and partnered with rescue services to test a battery-powered, drone-delivered 5G/4G base station for rapid disaster response. These initiatives underscore Telia’s role in improving both civilian and national security communication infrastructure.

Why it’s important

Telia’s achievement in providing 99% nationwide 5G coverage aligns with Norway’s strategic goal of becoming the most digitally advanced nation by 2030. As 5G adoption grows, it promises to drive innovation and improve sectors such as healthcare, education, and business, helping Norway stay competitive on the global digital stage. The integration of private 5G networks for critical infrastructure, like the armed forces and rescue services, enhances security, ensuring robust communication in emergencies and national security operations. The significant increase in mobile data usage and faster download speeds also signifies a major leap in the country’s digital economy, benefiting businesses and consumers alike. Telia’s focus on resilient, secure 5G services further strengthens Norway’s position as a global leader in technology. This rapid digital transformation will not only support future technological advancements but also create new opportunities for businesses and citizens, accelerating Norway’s digital ecosystem.
