What happened: Starlink commences high-speed internet services in Oman

The Telecommunications Regulatory Authority (TRA) of Oman has approved Starlink Muscat to operate as an internet service provider within the country. This approval enables Starlink, SpaceX’s satellite internet division, to offer high-speed, low-latency internet services across Oman. The initiative is part of Oman’s broader strategy to enhance digital connectivity and provide reliable internet access, especially in remote and underserved areas.

Why it is important

Starlink’s entry into Oman is expected to play a crucial role in strengthening the country’s digital infrastructure. By utilising a network of low Earth orbit satellites, Starlink can provide high-speed, low-latency internet access to remote and underserved areas where traditional broadband services are limited or unavailable. This initiative aligns with Oman’s long-term strategy to enhance its information and communication technology sector while supporting national economic diversification efforts. Improved connectivity is anticipated to benefit multiple industries, including education, healthcare, and business, by enabling seamless digital services, remote work opportunities, and enhanced access to online resources. Additionally, the increased availability of reliable internet is expected to drive innovation, attract foreign investment, and boost the country’s overall competitiveness in the global digital economy.
