What happened: Sunderland’s Stadium of Light enhances fan experience with new 5G service

Fans at the Stadium of Light now enjoy significantly better mobile coverage thanks to a large-scale 5G enhancement. The upgrade was delivered under the Sunderland Open Network Ecosystem (SONET) initiative, in partnership with Virgin Media O2 and Boldyn Networks. It is ready in time for the Women’s Rugby World Cup matches at the venue. The new system offers higher bandwidth, smoother uploads and downloads, reliable social media access and in-seat food ordering.

Delivery of the project also had funding support from the Department for Science, Innovation and Technology. Club officials emphasise this aligns with Sunderland AFC’s drive to elevate club facilities. The CEO of Boldyn Networks also highlighted its commitment to high-density connectivity in arenas and stadiums across the UK.

Why it’s important

Upgrading the stadium’s connectivity showcases how modern mobile networks improve live sports experiences. Reliable 5G access allows fans to stream content, share memories and access services instantly during match day. This supports Sunderland’s ambition to become a digital-forward city, blending physical events with interactive technology. It also demonstrates the value of neutral-host models in delivering shared coverage efficiently in crowded venues. The project positions the stadium as a test case for modern venue connectivity and could influence similar upgrades across the UK. It strengthens the link between telecom innovation, urban infrastructure, and fan engagement.
