  • The service, available from December 2025, is initially exclusive to Google Pixel 9 and 10 users.
  • After a six-month free trial, the service will cost $5 per month.

What happened: Orange launches satellite SMS service for remote connectivity

Orange has introduced the “Message Satellite” service, making it the first European operator to offer satellite SMS messaging. The service allows customers in mainland France and 36 other countries to send and receive SMS messages, even when mobile or Wi-Fi coverage is unavailable. Using the “Direct to Device” technology, the service connects smartphones directly to satellites, ensuring reliable message delivery in remote areas.

The service will be available to Orange’s 5G and 5G+ customers starting 11 December 2025. Initially, it will be offered exclusively to users with Google Pixel 9 and 10 devices. Over time, Orange plans to expand compatibility with other smartphones and add more services. For the first six months, the service will be free, after which users will pay $5 per month.

Why it’s important

The launch of “Message Satellite” addresses a growing demand for connectivity in areas with limited or no mobile coverage. This service is particularly useful for outdoor adventurers, emergency services, and businesses operating in remote regions, allowing them to stay connected when terrestrial networks are unavailable.

Orange’s move to integrate satellite connectivity into its mobile offering underscores its commitment to providing diverse and innovative solutions for customers. Jérôme Hénique, CEO of Orange France, highlighted the importance of staying connected in remote locations, while Michaël Trabbia, CEO of Orange Wholesale, noted that the satellite SMS service is just the first step towards broader technological advancements in connectivity. This service strengthens Orange’s position in France and sets a new benchmark for the mobile industry in Europe.
