Ofcom has introduced ‘Map Your Mobile‘, an advanced online tool designed to provide UK consumers with detailed insights into mobile network coverage and performance. the platform allows users to input their postcode and view a comprehensive map displaying the availability of 4G and 5G networks from major UK mobile operators.

The tool integrates predictive coverage data from mobile operators with real-world performance data sourced from Opensignal, a crowdsourced mobile analytics company. This combination aims to offer a more accurate representation of mobile network performance, reflecting actual user experiences. Notably, the tool provides coverage information at a more granular level of 50-metre squares, compared to the previous 100-metre squares, enhancing its precision.

Why it’s important

The launch of ‘Map Your Mobile’ comes at a time when many individuals are considering moving homes, with over half a million expected to relocate during the summer months. This tool empowers consumers to evaluate mobile network performance in potential new locations, ensuring they select areas with reliable coverage that meets their needs.

Furthermore, the tool aids users in assessing mobile coverage at their workplaces or along their daily commutes, providing valuable information for those who rely on mobile connectivity for work or personal activities. By offering detailed and accurate coverage data, Ofcom aims to enhance consumer choice and satisfaction, enabling individuals to make informed decisions about their mobile service providers.

Ofcom has indicated that ‘Map Your Mobile’ is an evolving platform, with plans to update and refine the tool regularly based on user feedback and advancements in mobile network data. This commitment underscores Ofcom’s dedication to improving mobile connectivity transparency and supporting consumers in navigating the complexities of mobile network options.
