  • OCL operates Malawi’s only redundant national fibre network, delivering wholesale backbone and last-mile connectivity across 24 districts.
  • Privately owned since 2018, the company invests in data centres, FTTH, and international links—driving digital transformation nationwide.

OCL: Fibre backbone and national coverage

Open Connect Limited (OCL), established in 2016 following the fibre unbundling from Malawi Telecommunications Ltd, operates Malawi’s only redundant national fibre network. It spans 24 districts, offers backbone capacities up to 9.9 Gbps, and connects internationally via Mozambique and Tanzania, including SEACOM and EASSY submarine cables.

OCL: Wholesale carrier services

As a wholesale provider, OCL delivers dark fibre, managed metro and national bandwidth, and data‑centre services to mobile operators, ISPs, broadcasters, and corporate clients. It does not compete at the retail level, instead empowering other providers with robust infrastructure.

OCL: Enterprise data‑centre and last‑mile connectivity

The company operates a tier‑3 enterprise data centre and provides Fibre‑to‑Home (FTTH) solutions and last‑mile dark fibre. Businesses benefit from secure, low‑latency links backed by OCL’s expandable network infrastructure.

OCL: Strategic private partnership

Privately held since 2018, OCL is majority‑owned by Harith General Partners (60%), alongside Press Corporation Plc, the Malawian government, and other investors. Harith’s US$24 million injection supports infrastructure upgrades and expansion.

OCL: Mission, vision and values

OCL’s mission is to lead digital development in Malawi and beyond. Its vision—“Harnessing the inherent value of our people and technology”—is supported by core values of alignment, excellence, confidentiality, and innovation.
