What happened: UScellular upgrades 5G network with Samsung’s mmWave and vRAN solutions

UScellular has upgraded its 5G network capabilities in the US Mid-Atlantic region by deploying Samsung’s 5G mmWave and virtualized Radio Access Network (vRAN) solutions. The new network architecture includes Samsung’s 5G Compact Macro, a 3GPP-based distributed architecture solution that consolidates the baseband, radio, and antenna into a single, lightweight form factor.

This technology enables mmWave connectivity, allowing UScellular to access bandwidth in the 28GHz and 39GHz bands, which support ultra-high speeds and low latency. Additionally, Samsung’s vRAN solution with Central Unit functionality supports UScellular’s virtualized network, providing additional bandwidth and advanced intelligence capabilities, including energy-saving features.

Why it’s important

The collaboration between Samsung and UScellular marks a significant step in enhancing 5G network performance in the US. By leveraging Samsung’s advanced 5G mmWave and vRAN technologies, UScellular can rapidly improve its network capabilities, offering faster speeds and more reliable connections to its customers.

This upgrade not only supports UScellular’s growing fixed wireless access and mobile traffic but also positions the company to better compete in the evolving telecommunications market. Additionally, the deal highlights the ongoing trend of network modernization and the increasing importance of strategic partnerships in the 5G era.
