What happened

According to multiple reports, MTN is planning to build its largest West African data centre. MTN Chief Technology Officer Mohammed Rufai says the move to build the data centre aims at strengthening Nigeria’s digital infrastructure.

“The data centre will also enhance content delivery by major tech companies such as Meta and Google, bringing content closer to Nigerian users and improving access speed,” he says.

It will provide the space and services needed to enable companies to operate digitally and become more efficient, playing a key role in meeting the growing data needs of businesses and consumers across the country.

Mohammed Rufai adds, “In our climate, up to 60% of the electricity consumed in a typical data center is used for cooling, and MTN’s efficient system will ensure that we meet our sustainability goals.”

Why it’s important

MTN’s construction of large data centres in West Africa plays an important role in the development of the digital economy in West Africa, helping to provide more stable and efficient network services.

Data centres not only provide businesses with the necessary space and services to operate digitally, but also help individual consumers meet the growing demand for data. For enterprises and consumers, this will bring more efficient business operations and more convenient personal Internet use experience.

MTN emphasises that efficient systems in its data centres will help reduce energy consumption, especially in terms of cooling, contributing to MTN’s “Ambition 2025” strategy for sustainable development in the AI era.
