  • KENET enables access to the digital resources essential for modern education.
  • The network faces challenges including affordability, infrastructure, and scaling across a rapidly evolving digital landscape.

Kenya Education Network: A digital revolution in education

KENET is Kenya’s premier National Research and Education Network (NREN), dedicated to connecting academic and research institutions across the country. Established in 1999, the network aims to provide high-speed internet, advanced technology, and digital solutions to facilitate education, research, and collaboration. Serving universities, colleges, research institutes, and government organisations, KENET plays a crucial role in supporting the development of the country’s digital learning ecosystem.

With a wide range of services, including internet connectivity, cloud hosting, and collaborative platforms, KENET provides Kenyan educational institutions with the necessary tools to thrive in the digital age. The network’s services enable institutions to access a vast range of educational resources, both locally and globally, significantly expanding learning and research opportunities for students and faculty.

Innovation and future prospects

KENET’s efforts have not gone unnoticed. The network has been instrumental in fostering collaborations with international education networks, allowing Kenyan institutions to participate in global research projects and share knowledge with the international academic community. This global connectivity has positioned Kenya as a key player in the African education sector.

With an increasing focus on e-learning due to the COVID-19 pandemic, KENET has accelerated its digitalisation efforts. Its support for remote learning solutions and virtual classrooms has allowed educational institutions to continue delivering lessons despite the disruptions caused by the pandemic.
