Indosat, Nokia & NVIDIA open AI‑RAN centre in Indonesia

    • The centre is billed as the first of its kind in Asia, combining RAN and AI workloads in one site.
    • The initiative aims to embed innovation in network optimisation and support Indonesia’s ambition for digital sovereignty.

What happened: New AI‑RAN research centre launched in Indonesia by Indosat, Nokia & NVIDIA

Indosat, Nokia and NVIDIA officially opened a dedicated AI‑RAN research centre in Surabaya, Indonesia, marking what local reports describe as the first lab in Asia to focus explicitly on AI‑enhanced Radio Access Network development. The facility builds on a prior announcement at Mobile World Congress 2025, where the partners revealed a collaboration to integrate Nokia’s 5G Cloud RAN and NVIDIA’s AI Aerial platform. Beyond the core infrastructure, the project brings together Indonesian universities and research institutes to work on network optimisation, spectral efficiency and energy management challenges.

    Why it’s important

This initiative represents a significant step in merging telecommunications and AI research, positioning Indonesia as more than a consumer of global tech and instead as a potential creator of next‑generation network platforms. By developing a dedicated AI‑RAN centre, the partnership supports the shift from traditional mobile‑broadband networks to infrastructure that can host both connectivity and AI workloads, a concept increasingly explored in academic literature. For Indonesia, this means strengthening digital sovereignty, creating localised innovation capability and potentially reducing dependency on overseas systems and vendors. At the same time, it offers global equipment makers a testbed for commercialising AI‑RAN architectures for 6G onward. The centre’s focus on energy efficiency and spectral optimisation is also timely as network operators grapple with rising data demand, cost pressures and sustainability commitments.

In conclusion, the opening of the AI‑RAN research centre by Indosat, Nokia and NVIDIA is both a signal of Indonesia’s ambitions in telecommunications innovation and a practical step toward future‑proof network infrastructure. Whether the lab can deliver commercial‑grade breakthroughs, translate research into large‑scale rollout and catalyse a local ecosystem will be key to its long‑term impact.
