iBasis snaps up Telstra International asset

  • iBasis acquires Telstra International’s wholesale contracts and team, extending into Australia, New Zealand and exclusive Digicel Pacific presence.
  • The move reinforces iBasis’s role as a consolidator of wholesale telecom assets and accelerates its expansion across the Asia-Pacific region.

What happened: iBasis expands into Australia, New Zealand and gains Digicel Pacific rights

iBasis has agreed to buy wholesale voice, mobile (IP-exchange) and messaging customer contracts from Telstra International, along with the transfer of key customer agreements and a team of commercial and operational professionals. Customers are expected to see continued support as the assets integrate into iBasis’s platform. The deal, scheduled to close before the end of 2025, marks iBasis’s first entry into Australia and New Zealand while also strengthening its positions in Hong Kong and Singapore. A notable part of the agreement grants iBasis exclusive rights to provide wholesale voice services for Digicel Pacific across Papua New Guinea, Fiji, Samoa, Tonga, Vanuatu and Nauru.

Why it is important

The action highlights iBasis’ extended strategy of consolidation in the wholesale cellphone business. By collecting these assets, the business extends its commercial footprint in the Asia-Pacific area and solidifies its authority as an independent, specialised supplier of wholesale services. The acquisition, claimed iBasis CEO Patrick George, is a significant step that boosts the company’s position within worldwide wholesale communications and speeds up growth. In this time, Telstra International transfers operations to a reliable partner to make sure continuity for its wholesale clients.

This arrangement, based on industry specialists, demonstrates a bigger trend of wholesale operators collaborating, where less and less players control an increasing proportion of global networks. Through a variety of acquisitions, Tofane Global, the corporate parent of iBasis, is growing its portfolio by encompassing voice and messaging organisations in Europe and beyond. Such consolidation raises concerns about decreased competition and fewer alternatives for customers globally, however it might assist carriers by improving performance and maintaining more dependable service.
