Elon Musk’s artificial intelligence chatbot Grok, developed by xAI and integrated with the social media platform X(formerly Twitter), has significantly limited its image generation capabilities following international backlash. The changes came after users exploited the tool to produce digitally manipulated images showing individuals in sexualised or abusive contexts without consent, including disturbing depictions involving women and children.
Grok’s image generation function, originally freely accessible to users, has been switched off for the majority of non-paying accounts on X, and access to editing and creation is now largely limited to paying subscribers whose identities are recorded. While the move restricts casual misuse on the main platform, reports suggest the standalone Grok app and other access points still allow harmful content to be generated.
The controversy escalated after research found hundreds of sexualised images produced by the AI, including some that simulated nudity or violence, prompting alarm among safety advocates. This design choice appears to have contributed to the flood of inappropriate imagery that sparked the current backlash.
Victims and advocacy groups have expressed frustration that the harm was allowed to proliferate before substantive action occurred. For individuals affected, such as those whose images were manipulated without consent, the damage is immediate and deeply personal, underscoring how generative systems can amplify abuse if safeguards fail.
