Google and AI startup Character.AI have reached mediated settlements in principle with families who filed several lawsuits accusing their chatbots of playing a role in teenagers’ deaths and self‑harm. The most prominent case was brought by a Florida mother, Megan Garcia, who alleged that her 14‑year‑old son, Sewell Setzer III, took his own life after prolonged engagement with a chatbot modelled on a character from Game of Thrones. Related lawsuits were filed in Colorado, New York and Texas, with families asserting that AI chatbot behaviour contributed to self‑harm or encouraged harmful thinking.
The legal documents do not yet disclose the details of the settlements, which must still be approved by judges. Lawyers for the families and representatives for both companies declined to comment. Google was named in the suits partly because it licensed Character.AI’s technology and hired its co‑founders following a technology and staffing deal in 2024. Character.AI previously implemented safeguards including banning users under 18 from open‑ended chats, and introducing parental controls and content filters, though those changes have not stopped legal action.
