Future of sports broadcasting: Paris Olympics sets new standards

What happened

The 2024 Paris Summer Olympics will commence on July 26 and run through August 11, featuring hundreds of events across multiple venues. With the Games running concurrently, keeping up with all the action can be overwhelming for sports enthusiasts. This year, however, there is an unprecedented range of viewing options available to fans.

NBC, the primary US broadcaster, has faced criticism in the past for its approach to Olympic coverage, which often involved spreading events across multiple channels and delaying live broadcasts. This year, NBC and other broadcasters are aiming to address these concerns by improving accessibility. Online platforms are also stepping up, with TikTok launching an Olympics hub and Instagram’s @olympics account sharing training videos and action shots. Google will provide live scores, medal ceremonies, and highlights through search results and its Assistant.

Yiannis Exarchos, CEO of the Olympic Broadcasting Service (OBS), highlighted the significant increase in coverage, with the total run time for Olympic events expected to be around 3,800 hours. OBS plans to expand this into over 11,000 hours of content, including live coverage, behind-the-scenes features, and highlights.

Why it’s important

The expanded coverage and new viewing options mark a significant change in how the Olympics are presented to audiences. The shift towards digital platforms and personalised content aims to meet the diverse viewing habits of modern audiences, making it easier for fans to follow their favourite sports, athletes, and events. NBC’s Peacock streaming platform will offer customisable viewing options, allowing users to curate their own schedules and watch up to four live events simultaneously.

The introduction of features like the Multiview tool on Peacock, which allows viewers to watch multiple events on the same screen, and the ability to sort listings by sport, athlete, or country, are designed to enhance the viewing experience. With the Paralympics also scheduled to start on August 28, viewers will have a full range of options to stay engaged with the Games.

The comprehensive coverage and advanced viewing tools represent a major leap forward in broadcasting the Olympics, aiming to provide a more flexible and engaging experience for viewers around the world.
