    • Ericsson will deploy its latest TDD Massive MIMO radio and other solutions to modernise VodafoneZiggo’s mobile network.
    • The partnership aims to reduce energy consumption while supporting new IoT use cases and VodafoneZiggo’s sustainability targets.

What happened: Ericsson to modernise VodafoneZiggo’s network across 3,000 sites in Netherlands

Ericsson has won a three-year deal to modernise VodafoneZiggo’s mobile network across 3,000 sites in the Netherlands. The agreement includes deploying equipment that utilises VodafoneZiggo’s 3.5GHz spectrum. The deployment will enable the development of new use cases for consumers, businesses, and Internet of Things (IoT) applications.

The companies jointly announced on Monday that the initiative also aligns with VodafoneZiggo’s sustainability goals. Ericsson will supply its TDD Massive MIMO radio, the AIR 3255, which is designed to deliver up to a 63% reduction in energy consumption. Ericsson will also install additional network solutions that focus on further reducing energy usage, simplifying installation processes, and ensuring that high performance remains uncompromised.

The programme will expand the all-Ericsson network footprint and includes comprehensive build and deployment services, with work set to begin later this year.

    Why it’s important

This partnership marks a significant step for both Ericsson and VodafoneZiggo in their efforts to address the growing demand for IoT applications and more sustainable network operations. The modernisation of the mobile sites will not only improve VodafoneZiggo’s service offerings but also contribute to the operator’s environmental objectives, positioning it as a leader in green telecom solutions.

By reducing energy consumption through advanced technologies like the AIR 3255, the deal supports the telecom industry’s wider push towards sustainability. The upgraded infrastructure will allow VodafoneZiggo to cater to the increasing demands of IoT, helping both consumers and businesses benefit from faster, more reliable mobile services.

The deployment also represents a broader trend of telecom operators increasingly prioritising energy efficiency and eco-friendly solutions, as part of their commitment to reducing carbon footprints and supporting the global push towards greener technology.
