City of Boroondara embraces the digital era

  • The City of Boroondara has launched a substantial program titled “Transforming Boroondara” that will roll out personalised digital notifications, 24/7 online self-service portals and a live-chat support offering across council services.
  • The council is also working on an “Innovation Spine” urban-planning initiative in the Glenferrie precinct designed to deploy smart-city technologies such as connected streets, data sensors and integrated mobility services.

City of Boroondara’s growth and focus

On its LinkedIn profile, the City of Boroondara emphasizes its role as a metropolitan council serving more than 170,000 residents in Melbourne’s inner-eastern suburbs. The council has committed to modernising its core systems through a multi-year upgrade program, including replacing legacy finance systems and introducing a new customer-relationship platform.

Its “Community Plan 2025-35” underlines innovation, continuous improvement and inclusive access to services — particularly digital ones. The council is also partnering with local universities and industry to embed smart-city capabilities and involve students in developing solutions for community challenges.

Industry context and challenges

Across Australia, councils face a similar test: serve more residents, do it faster, and keep everything secure. Technology helps, but replacing older systems and staying within budget is not easy. Running a modern city means facing constant change. Residents expect faster services, better access and clean data management — often while budgets stay flat. Many local councils are still modernising systems built decades ago.

Boroondara has shown that progress can come from steady improvement. It’s building better online access, quicker feedback tools and clearer ways for residents to interact. These updates make day-to-day tasks simpler and save people time. Rather than focusing on talk, Boroondara’s team has focused on function. Its mix of clear communication, simple design and reliable service gives it an edge and sets a quiet example for others.
