  • BT Business CEO Bas Burger calls for critical infrastructure sectors to switch from PSTN to digital before the 2027 deadline.
  • The transition affects essential services, including lifts and telecare systems, many of which currently rely on outdated technology.

OUR TAKE
Bas Burger’s warning about the impending PSTN shutdown highlights the urgency for critical infrastructure sectors to embrace digital technologies. With significant risks posed by outdated systems, proactive measures are necessary to ensure that essential services remain reliable. Transitioning to digital solutions not only enhances service quality but also safeguards public safety in an increasingly interconnected world.

What happened

BT Business CEO, Bas Burger, has urged critical national infrastructure clients, such as lift operators and medical equipment providers, to transition to digital phone solutions prior to the Public Switched Telephone Network shutdown set for January 31, 2027. Earlier this year, BT delayed the migration deadline by an additional 12 months.

Currently, around 300,000 lifts are operational, with 180,000 still linked to the analogue system. The shift will also affect 1.8 million users relying on home telecare systems that may not be compatible with new VoIP-based services. Burger emphasised the growing risk to critical services as the ageing network becomes obsolete, stressing the need for urgent action among customers dependent on PSTN.

Why it’s important

The announcement regarding the PSTN shutdown is highly significant, as it underscores the necessity for critical infrastructure sectors to adapt to modern technology. Bas Burger’s call to action emphasises the potential dangers posed by outdated systems, particularly for essential services like lifts and medical devices.

The urgency conveyed in the message serves as a wake-up call for organisations to prioritise their transition to digital solutions, ultimately enhancing reliability and safety. As the UK moves toward a more technologically advanced landscape, ensuring that all sectors are equipped with robust, modern communication methods is crucial for maintaining public trust and service efficiency. This transition is not just a technical upgrade; it’s vital for safeguarding the nation’s critical services.
