    • The RIPE NCC launches an updated dnsmon tool to enhance domain name system monitoring with a clearer interface.
    • The redesign aims to improve data access and visualisation for network operators and dns researchers.

What happened: RIPE NCC launches redesigned dnsmon platform

The RIPE Network Coordination Centre (RIPE NCC) has introduced a redesigned version of its dnsmon platform, a tool used to monitor the global domain name system (DNS). This upgrade features a refreshed user interface intended to streamline access to DNS performance and security data. The new dnsmon offers improved visualisations, including clearer graphs and metrics, enabling operators to better assess the health and stability of DNS infrastructure. Additionally, the update integrates recent technical developments, allowing users to track key DNS services such as authoritative servers and recursive resolvers more effectively. The RIPE NCC’s dnsmon is publicly available and remains free to use, serving as a critical resource for network operators, researchers, and internet service providers aiming to maintain reliable DNS operations. According to the RIPE NCC announcement, this redesign reflects user feedback and a desire to modernise the tool’s appearance while preserving its data accuracy and scope.

    Why this is important

The domain name system underpins the internet by translating human-readable addresses into IP addresses, making DNS monitoring essential for maintaining internet stability and security. The RIPE NCC’s refreshed dnsmon addresses ongoing industry demands for accessible, real-time DNS data amid increasing cyber threats targeting DNS infrastructure. By enhancing data clarity and expanding monitoring capabilities, dnsmon supports better operational decision-making and rapid response to DNS anomalies. This is particularly significant as more organisations rely on DNS to secure their digital assets against attacks such as cache poisoning and distributed denial of service (DDoS). The update aligns with broader efforts in the internet governance community to improve transparency and resilience of critical infrastructure. With dnsmon’s redesign, network operators, especially smaller providers and researchers who may lack extensive internal tools, gain easier access to authoritative DNS insights, strengthening the overall health of the internet ecosystem. The RIPE NCC’s continuous work on tools like dnsmon reflects its role as a trusted custodian of IP resources and internet operations in Europe and beyond.
