  • Key milestones include addressing trust anchor configuration issues and documenting RPKI services across all RIRs.

What happened: NRO reviews 2024 RPKI achievements

The Number Resource Organization (NRO) has released a year-end update on its Resource Public Key Infrastructure (RPKI) Program, showcasing significant progress in enhancing the security and reliability of internet routing. Launched earlier this year, the program seeks to deliver a consistent and resilient RPKI service across all Regional Internet Registries (RIRs).

Among its 2024 milestones, the NRO documented a problem statement concerning the current Trust Anchor configuration, a critical component of RPKI that impacts how secure routing is maintained globally. The organization also began exploring potential solutions, with plans to present a detailed proposal for community discussion in the near future.

Additionally, the NRO compiled a comprehensive overview of RPKI services and features offered by each RIR. This effort highlights the current state of RPKI implementation and provides valuable insights into its global robustness.

Why it is important

The RPKI Program plays a vital role in enhancing the security of internet routing infrastructure by mitigating risks like route hijacking and misconfigurations. The documentation of RPKI services and exploration of trust anchor solutions signal a commitment to bolstering the reliability of internet number resource management.

The NRO’s ongoing collaboration with the global internet community ensures that these advancements address the evolving needs of internet stakeholders. As the organization moves forward with new proposals and solutions, the broader internet ecosystem will benefit from improved stability and security.

According to an NRO spokesperson, “These achievements reflect our dedication to creating a safer, more resilient internet infrastructure for all.”
