  • This event highlights the growing importance of IXPs in supporting the surge in digital content consumption and live streaming.

What happened: Namex achieves Terabit traffic milestone

On January 15, 2025, Namex achieved a historic milestone by reaching the first terabit of internet network traffic. This significant event coincided with the live broadcast of the Inter – Bologna football match on DAZN, underscoring the growing importance of streaming services in Italy.

Established in 1995, Namex has transformed from a local exchange point into a vital hub for internet traffic in the Mediterranean region. The journey to this terabit milestone saw several key achievements, including reaching 1 Gbps in 2004 and experiencing exponential growth, notably during the pandemic when traffic peaked at 150 Gbps.

The continuous advancements and technological improvements enabled Namex to support major global companies like Netflix, Facebook, and Amazon, reinforcing its status as a crucial Internet Exchange Point (IXP).

Why it’s important

The achievement of reaching a terabit of traffic marks a pivotal moment not just for Namex, but for the entire internet infrastructure landscape. As global digital consumption surges, driven by high-quality streaming and cloud services, IXPs like Namex play a crucial role in managing and optimising internet traffic.

This milestone reflects broader industry trends where live sports events and streaming platforms increasingly dictate bandwidth demand. The impact of the COVID-19 pandemic accelerated a shift towards digital connectivity, with services such as video conferencing and online entertainment becoming essential.

Namex’s success also highlights the importance of robust network infrastructure. In an age where consumers expect seamless online experiences, the ability to handle terabits of traffic is vital for meeting these demands. The rising engagement with streaming platforms illustrates a fundamental shift in content consumption, leading to record-breaking traffic figures across various IXPs worldwide.

As digital content continues to proliferate, the role of IXPs in ensuring efficient and resilient internet connectivity becomes even more significant. This achievement not only showcases Namex’s technological growth but also signals a readiness to tackle future challenges in an increasingly interconnected world.
