  • Rüdiger Geib is appointed as the liaison manager between IETF and ITU-T SG12
  • The role aims to enhance global standards for network and service performance

What happened

The Internet Architecture Board (IAB) on November 21 appointed Rudiger Geib as Liaison Manager for the Internet Engineering Task Force (IETF) and Study Group 12 (ITU-T SG12), the standardization arm of the International Telecommunication Union.

This group focuses on developing global standards for Quality of Service (QoS) and Quality of Experience (QoE) in networks and telecommunications. Geib’s appointment is set to strengthen technical cooperation between the two organizations. Working under established RFC guidelines, Geib will oversee collaborative efforts to streamline the creation and adoption of technical standards. This development reinforces the commitment to improve end-user experiences globally and supports emerging technologies like 5G. This technologies are heavily rely on robust QoS and QoE frameworks.

What it’s important

Rüdiger Geib’s appointment has broad implications for industries reliant on seamless network performance and global standards. The integration of IETF’s internet protocol expertise with ITU-T SG12’s telecom standards ensures robust frameworks for emerging technologies like 5G, AI-driven services, and autonomous systems. For example, U-blox, a Swiss-based SME specializing in IoT modules for real-time applications like connected vehicles and smart cities. Without harmonized QoS and QoE benchmarks, companies like u-blox face delays in deploying products across diverse markets.

This collaboration echoes global trends. For instance, ETSI’s alignment with 3GPP to streamline 5G rollout benefited both large telcos and smaller network firms. The partnership underscores the importance of synchronizing efforts to avoid fragmented standards, which can delay advancements and inflate costs. Taking a positive stance, Geib’s role exemplifies how shared technical leadership benefits both the consumer experience and a competitive technology ecosystem, enabling equitable growth across industries.
