  • ARIN has announced the conclusion of the ICP-2 Principles Consultation, a process aimed at updating the criteria for establishing new Regional Internet Registries (RIRs).
  • The updates reflect evolving global internet governance needs and community feedback.

What happened: ARIN concludes ICP-2 Principles Consultation to update RIR criteria

On January 22, 2025, ARIN announced the completion of the Internet Coordination Policy-2 (ICP-2) Principles Consultation. This consultation, initiated by the Number Resource Organization (NRO), sought input from the global internet community on revising the principles that guide the establishment of new RIRs.

The Address Supporting Organization Address Council (ASO AC) has been working to update ICP-2 to ensure the policy remains relevant in the face of evolving global internet infrastructure and governance needs. These revisions aim to create a more robust and adaptable framework for recognizing new RIRs in the future.

Why it’s important

Updating ICP-2 is essential to maintaining a framework that reflects the current and future needs of the global internet community. As the internet grows and new challenges arise, ensuring clear and relevant criteria for establishing RIRs is critical for maintaining effective governance and resource allocation.

This process also highlights the importance of transparency and inclusivity in internet governance, as it actively involves community feedback to shape key policies. Such updates ensure the long-term stability and adaptability of the internet’s infrastructure.
