What happened: United Group announces $1.56B Serbian telecom asset sale

United Group B.V., the leading telecommunications and media provider in Southeastern Europe, has announced a €1.5 billion deal to sell its Serbian telecom assets. The agreement includes the sale of SBB doo Belgrade, a leading provider of pay-TV, broadband internet, and fixed telephone services, to e& PPF Telecom Group BV.

Additionally, United Group will sell Eon TV International Ltd (the holding company of NetTV Plus) and its sports broadcasting rights for the Western Balkans to Telekom Srbija. These transactions are expected to be completed during the first half of 2025, subject to regulatory approvals.

    Why it’s important

The sale of United Group’s Serbian telecom assets is a significant step in the company’s strategy to exit non-EU markets and focus on its EU operations. The combined enterprise value of €1.5 billion (equivalent to approximately US$1.56 billion based on the current exchange rate) demonstrates the strong market position and growth potential of United Group’s operations in the region.

By divesting its non-EU assets, United Group aims to streamline its operations and enhance its efficiency, positioning itself for long-term success in the EU markets.
