  • Sangiorgio moves from Digital Realty to lead Google’s EMEA submarine network efforts.
  • His career includes roles at Sparkle where he rose from network services director to VP of subsea cables.

What happened: Google appoints ex-Sparkle VP Luigi Sangiorgio to lead EMEA subsea operations and boost Mediterranean cable growth

Google has hired Luigi Sangiorgio as head of its subsea operations in the EMEA region, bringing in a leader with deep industry experience. Sangiorgio previously served as operations manager at Digital Realty, and before that spent six years at Sparkle rising to the role of VP for subsea cables. In a post on LinkedIn, he said the new role would connect him again with Sicily, where his career began, and help Google develop major Mediterranean cable hubs. His mandate includes expanding Google’s footprint in submarine cable infrastructure and strengthening collaboration in the region.

Why it is important

This appointment underscores Google’s increasing commitment to controlling more of the submarine infrastructure that underpins global connectivity. As cloud and AI services demand lower latency and higher bandwidth, owning or operating subsea links gives Google tighter control over performance and resilience. Sangiorgio’s background at Sparkle and in subsea cable operations positions him well to manage these technical and commercial challenges. Moreover, the move signals to the telecom industry that hyperscalers are keen to deepen their role not just in data centres and networks, but in the undersea fabric that connects continents.
