    • Second site adds 150 MW, raising total Japanese capacity to 350 MW.

    • Facilities built for ultra-high density workloads (600 kW+ per rack), positioning Osaka as a strategic hub for AI and cloud deployments.

What happened:Acquisition of second Osaka site

EdgeConneX, the EQT-backed data centre firm, has announced the acquisition of a second site for development in Greater Osaka–Yawata, Japan. Once completed, this will provide an additional 150 MW of utility power capacity, bringing the company’s total footprint in Japan to 350 MW.

A formal acquisition ceremony was held on 7 August with Keihan Real Estate, the local landowner and integrated developer that is part of the century-old Keihan Group.

The first EdgeConneX project in the region—a 200 MW facility in Greater Osaka–Kyoto in partnership with Kagoya Asset Management—was announced in January and is due to begin construction early in 2026, targeting a ready-for-service date in the fourth quarter of 2027.

EdgeConneX emphasises that these new facilities are equipped to handle extremely high-density workloads—exceeding 600 kW per rack—using its Ingenuity product suite and supporting advanced Nvidia, AMD and Intel deployments.

    Why it’s important

This expansion underscores Osaka’s emergence as a pivotal centre for AI and cloud infrastructure, playing into Japan’s broader ambition to become a successive “Digital Garden City Nation,” where regional innovation and sustainability converge. EdgeConneX’s presence will help reinforce that status by offering some of the highest-density capacity available.

Sam Lee, Managing Director for Market & Commercial Development, asserts the rapid expansion in Japan reflects “EdgeConneX’s commitment to supporting the country’s digital transformation” through scalable, innovative, and sustainable solutions in a constrained power environment. Masahiko Inoue, Head of Japan, adds that the two facilities will help solidify Japan’s standing as a global leader in AI and cloud technologies.
