  • Ethereum co-founder Vitalik Buterin has expressed optimism about the potential of artificial intelligence (AI) to identify flaws in the Ethereum software.
  • The efficacy of using artificial intelligence (AI) to detect errors in Ethereum-based programs is a subject of debate, as demonstrated by a series of tests conducted by OpenZeppelin.

Co-founder of Ethereum Vitalik Buterin has expressed his excitement about using AI to find any flaws in the Ethereum software.

Ethereum co-founder Buterin highlights AI’s role in identifying technical risks

Artificial intelligence (AI), according to Ethereum co-founder Vitalik Buterin, may be essential to resolving one of the platform’s “biggest technical” risks: faults hidden deep in its code.

Buterin, Co-founder of Ethereum, expressed his excitement for AI-powered audits to find and correct problematic code in the Ethereum network in a post on X on February 18.

With the long-awaited Dencun upgrade set to arrive on March 13, Buterin’s remarks come as Ethereum getting closer to adopting the update. Dencun is about to release a number of updates that will boost Ethereum’s overall network efficiency, security, and scalability.

On January 17, the Goerli testnet, a cross-client proof-of-authority testing network for Ethereum, received Dencun; however, for four hours, a problem kept the network from concluding.

OpenZeppelin tests AI GPT-4 for error detection in Ethereum

There is disagreement about whether AI is a trustworthy method for finding errors in Ethereum-based programs.

In a series of tests carried out in July 2023, OpenZeppelin, an open-source framework, used OpenAI’s GPT-4 to find security flaws in Solidity smart contracts, which are written in Ethereum’s native language.

GPT-4 failed to detect all errors. At other times, though, OpenZeppelin discovered that the AI had created a vulnerability where none had previously been.
