    • SudREN became the sixth member of the UbuntuNet Alliance, which led to its participation in the U-NET projects in collaboration with the European Union and the international community through AfricaConnect.
    • SudREN is a member of the AFRINIC organisation, having obtained its own Autonomous System (AS) number and a substantial range of IP addresses.
    • SudREN is a founding member of ASREN (Arab States Research and Education Network), which is dedicated to supporting research and education in the Arab region.

    Development and impact of SudREN

The Sudanese Research and Education Network (SudREN), established in 2003, aimed to bridge the gap in internet connectivity for Sudanese educational and research institutions. Initially focused on building infrastructure, SudREN installed fibre-optic cables and network equipment, with support from international organisations like the European Union and UNESCO.

By the late 2000s, the network had connected several major universities, laying the groundwork for future expansion. Throughout the 2010s, SudREN broadened its reach, adding new nodes and improving capacity. Regional collaboration with networks such as the African Research and Education Network (AFREN) enabled wider participation in research and educational projects.

In recent years, SudREN has upgraded its technology, enhancing bandwidth and network security. The network has played a vital role in supporting e-learning, particularly during the COVID-19 pandemic, by facilitating online courses and virtual classrooms. It has also fostered local tech innovation and supported international research collaborations.

Despite challenges like political instability and funding constraints, SudREN continues to advance Sudan’s educational and research sectors. Future goals include expanding network resilience and integrating new technologies to keep pace with the digital landscape.

So, I advise young women in STEM to always think of themself as a successful, powerful, self-confident, hard-working, and well-organised woman and work to make it become a reality. Then, success will certainly follow.
