MTN Uganda expands mobile and financial services

MTN Uganda is the largest telecommunications provider in the country, serving millions of subscribers with mobile voice, broadband internet, and digital financial services. According to its LinkedIn profile, the company employs over 1,000 staff and works to connect individuals and businesses across Uganda. It is part of the wider MTN Group, which operates across Africa and the Middle East.

The company’s product portfolio includes prepaid and postpaid mobile services, mobile money, enterprise connectivity and digital lifestyle solutions. MTN Uganda has also focused on developing Mobile Money (MoMo) as a cornerstone of financial inclusion. This platform allows customers to send and receive money, pay bills and access basic financial services, which has become especially important in rural areas with limited access to banks.

MTN Uganda responds to industry challenges

Uganda’s telecom industry has grown steadily over the past decade, driven by mobile adoption and expanding internet use. However, it still faces hurdles such as high infrastructure costs, patchy rural coverage and increasing pressure on operators to maintain affordable pricing. Cybersecurity threats and the rapid demand for digital services also pose additional challenges.

MTN Uganda addresses these issues by investing in network expansion, with ongoing projects to extend 4G coverage and prepare for 5G deployment. The company also works on digital innovation, introducing mobile applications and self-service platforms to improve customer experience. Its fintech services continue to expand, with MoMo supporting both individuals and businesses through convenient and secure digital payments. By combining strong network infrastructure, financial technology and customer-focused digital tools, MTN Uganda plays a leading role in the country’s digital economy. Its work not only connects millions of people but also supports entrepreneurship, financial inclusion and the broader development of Uganda’s ICT sector.
