    • Irix Sdn. Bhd. launches Sarawak’s first Internet Exchange, enhancing digital connectivity and online experiences for businesses and communities.
    • The “irix” Internet Exchange, powered by AMS-IX, aims to reduce latency, boost network performance, and expand global connectivity in Southeast Asia.
    • Irix’s initiative supports Sarawak’s digital economic strategy by improving infrastructure, establishing a regional gateway, and enhancing workforce skills.

Irix Sdn. Bhd., a leader in telecommunications in Sarawak, is thrilled to introduce its very own Internet Exchange, named “irix.” This development marks Sarawak’s entry into the realm of Internet Exchanges, with the platform being powered by the globally renowned AMS-IX (Amsterdam Internet Exchange).

The creation of the “irix” Internet Exchange is a key component of Sarawak’s strategy to become a vital regional Internet hub for Southeast Asia.

Following the 2022 initiation of the Batam – Sarawak Internet Cable system (BaSICS) and the establishment of “irix DC,” the only Tier-IV certified Data Centre in Malaysia located in Sarawak, this new platform aims to significantly boost digital connectivity and enhance the online experience across Sarawak for businesses, communities, government entities, and individuals.

Benefits of the new “irix” Internet Exchange

Internet Exchanges are integral to the Internet’s infrastructure, enabling the efficient transfer of traffic between IP networks. The “irix” Internet Exchange promises to:

    • Reduce latency: By facilitating direct peering between content delivery networks (CDNs), internet service providers (ISPs), and mobile network operators (MNOs) within Sarawak, the exchange will markedly decrease latency. This reduction will lead to quicker loading times for websites, applications, and digital content.
    • Boost network performance: Designed as a high-performance, carrier-neutral platform, the “irix” Internet Exchange ensures seamless and efficient data flow between networks. Its advanced infrastructure ensures a superior internet experience for all users.
    • Expand global connectivity: Through its collaboration with AMS-IX, “irix” connects to a worldwide network of peering partners, thereby strengthening Sarawak’s global digital footprint. This enhanced connectivity provides local businesses with access to an expanded customer base and gives residents improved internet services.

A transformative step for Sarawak’s digital landscape

Dr Jonathan Smith, CEO of irix, commented on this significant milestone, stating, “The launch of Sarawak’s first Internet Exchange, powered by the prestigious AMS-IX, marks a transformative phase for our digital infrastructure. Our aim is to equip businesses, service providers, and the wider community with high-speed, reliable internet connectivity, fostering limitless innovation and growth. As pioneers in this sector, we are dedicated to establishing a robust digital foundation for Sarawak.”

Peter van Burgel, CEO of AMS-IX, also expressed his enthusiasm, “We are excited to partner with irix and contribute to their vision of transforming Sarawak into a digital gateway for the region. At AMS-IX, we are committed to enhancing the Internet globally, and our partnership with irix exemplifies our commitment to improving digital experiences in Sarawak and across Borneo.”
