Services and role of Camtel
Camtel is Cameroon’s national telecommunications operator, established in 1998 and state owned. It provides fixed and mobile voice, internet, data and digital television services. The company launched its mobile brand Blue in 2021, now offering 3G and 4G services. It also operates ADSL and fibre to the home services and holds nationwide monopoly over fibre optic backbone leasing.
Camtel provides IP transit and exchange infrastructure to ISPs and carriers across Central Africa, via its robust backbone network. The company plans to launch mobile financial services in 2025 to support inclusion via telecom infrastructure. It also manages datacentre, leased lines, satellite and transport network services. Camtel serves public institutions, businesses and wholesale clients across the telecommunications ecosystem.

Infrastructure, strategy and national impact
Camtel operates over 15,000 km of fibre optic backbone across Cameroon with plans to expand further by 2025. It participates in the Central African Backbone project connecting multiple ECCAS countries. The company owns AS15964, announcing about 160 IPv4 and 17 IPv6 prefixes and peers with global internet exchanges. It signed national roaming agreements with MTN and Orange to boost mobile coverage in rural areas.
Camtel holds ISO 9001 certification for its transport infrastructure. Its board approved a 5.2 million US dollar budget for 2025, focusing on governance reforms and digital growth across Central Africa. Camtel plans 5G pilot deployments in Yaoundé, Douala and rural areas in line with national universal service policy. The company combines public sector mandate with strategic investment to drive national connectivity.
