Services and mandate of BBS

BBS is the national broadband infrastructure operator in Burundi. It was founded in 2010 as a public-private partnership. The company designs and manages a high-speed fibre-optic network across the country. It connects government agencies, universities, banks, and service providers. BBS delivers secure and scalable internet infrastructure. Its services include IP transit, data hosting, and high-availability network access. The network ensures fault-tolerant routing and stable connectivity.

BBS supports government communications by offering secure internal links. It also enables reliable broadband for education, finance, and telecoms. Its infrastructure helps other service providers expand broadband access. BBS operates a centralised network operations centre to manage uptime. It also offers services like VoIP, server hosting, and remote monitoring. The company focuses on improving digital coverage and service reliability. It helps connect underserved areas in both urban and rural zones.

Infrastructure footprint and national role

BBS operates over 1,200 kilometres of fibre-optic network. Its infrastructure reaches all major provinces in Burundi. The network supports both backbone and last-mile connectivity. Local telecoms use BBS infrastructure to serve end users. By 2014, the network reached dozens of communes across the country. BBS hosts several points-of-presence and network aggregation sites. These connect national and cross-border internet routes. Its IP transit service offers reliable, low-latency connections.

BBS has linked many public universities to broadband services. The education network supports research and e-learning. Banks and public offices also rely on BBS for data security. The company helps deliver digital public services. It promotes national growth through better internet infrastructure. Its long-term goal is to improve affordability and coverage. BBS continues to expand the network for wider service availability. The company plays a key role in Burundi’s digital ecosystem.
