  • Africell has led the way in The Gambia’s telecommunications sector with continuous technological advancements, including the launch of a 5G network in 2024.
  • The company’s success is also rooted in its strong community engagement, supporting initiatives like youth sports, education, and agricultural programs.
  • Since its founding in 2001, Africell has grown to become the market leader, serving over 2 million subscribers and holding a dominant position in the industry.

Africell has established itself as the leading telecommunications provider in The Gambia through relentless technological innovation and deep community engagement, growing its subscriber base to over 2 million and maintaining a dominant market position since its founding in 2001.

Africell leads the way in technological advancements

Africell’s dedication to technological innovation has been relentless. In January 2018, the company launched its 4G/LTE network, initially covering the Greater Banjul area, and later expanding across The Gambia. This move set the stage for faster, more reliable internet services, with download and upload speeds reaching up to 150 Mbit/s.

By September 2019, Africell had doubled these speeds with the introduction of the 4G+ network, offering download speeds of up to 300 Mbit/s. Most recently, in 2024, Africell launched its 5G network in five strategic locations, including Banjul and Senegambia, delivering unprecedented speeds of up to 1 Tbit/s. This latest innovation ensures that Africell remains at the forefront of technological advancements in The Gambia, providing its subscribers with the most advanced mobile services available.

Africell’s commitment beyond technology

Africell’s success is not solely due to its technological advancements. The company has embedded itself in the social fabric of The Gambia through extensive social investments. Africell has been a staunch supporter of the youth, sponsoring local football teams, aiding educational institutions, and even organising its own beauty pageant to celebrate Gambian culture.

One of Africell’s standout initiatives is its “back to the land” promotion, which supports remote farmers, demonstrating the company’s commitment to the well-being of all segments of Gambian society. This blend of community support and cutting-edge technology has earned Africell a loyal customer base that continues to grow.

About Africell

Africell’s journey in The Gambia began in 2001, with the company quickly establishing itself as a game-changer in the telecommunications sector. Unlike its competitors, Africell distinguished itself through an unwavering commitment to customer service and community engagement. By offering the most advanced call center in the country and superior promotions at competitive prices, Africell quickly captured the hearts and minds of Gambians.

The company’s rise to market leadership was swift. By July 2006, Africell had become the market leader in terms of subscribers, and by April 2008, it had reached 500,000 subscribers, a number that has since quadrupled. Today, Africell serves over 2 million subscribers, maintaining a market share of over 63%, and continues to be a dominant force in The Gambia’s telecommunications landscape.
