AFRINIC’s internal election crisis and ongoing governance failures lead to calls for the registry’s dissolution Cloud Innovation demands ICANN and the NRO take immediate action to appoint a new Regional Internet Registry.​

AFRINIC’s governance breakdown: A crisis in leadership

AFRINIC has faced governance challenges for a long time and this has led to its current dysfunction the June 23 election was annulled recently because of a dispute over unverified proxies this made votes invalid and weakened trust in the registry this crisis has raised concerns about how Africa’s IP resources are managed and the future of its digital infrastructure.

ICANN’s overreach: Undermining African autonomy

ICANN’s actions have caused widespread backlash its attempts to influence AFRINIC’s leadership threaten the region’s bottom-up governance model the ICP-2 compliance document gives ICANN great power to de-recognize regional registries it bypasses multistakeholder processes this weakens regional autonomy more and makes ICANN’s reach go beyond its traditional role.

Cloud Innovation: Leading the charge for reform

Cloud Innovation Ltd. is a key stakeholder in the ongoing push for reform it is AFRINIC’s third-largest member and has called for the registry’s dissolution because of its governance failures it has demanded ICANN and the NRO appoint a new Regional Internet Registry (RIR) right away to make sure Africa’s IP resources are managed properly.

The legal struggle: Courts vs. Cabinet

The ongoing legal battle between the Mauritius courts and AFRINIC’s leadership is a critical point for African internet governance the result of this standoff could define the future of regional autonomy and Africa’s relationship with global institutions like ICANN this case has broader implications for digital freedom governance and the balance of power in the global internet ecosystem.
