AFRINIC reschedules election under Supreme Court oversight

  • Supreme Court orders Receiver to hold supervised election on 12 September 2025
  • New online voting window runs from 10 to 12 September

What happened: Court calls for fair election with Electoral Commissioner oversight

AFRINIC issued an important communiqué on 06 September 2025 citing a Supreme Court order from 05 September in the case Cloud Innovation Ltd v G Dabee & Anor. The Court directed that the Receiver proceed with the board election—scheduled for 12 September—under the supervision of the Electoral Commissioner to ensure the process is free and fair.

On 06 September, the Receiver and members of the Election Committee held a consultation with the Electoral Commissioner. Following that meeting, the Receiver announced the revised voting schedule: online voting will open on Wednesday 10 September 2025 at 12:00 MUT and close on Friday 12 September 2025 at 20:00 MUT. Resource members are urged to participate actively.

Why it’s important

The communiqué raises concerns about AFRINIC’s governance. Observers say the organisation must act under the Mauritius Companies Act, not government orders. They note that the June 2025 election was free and fair, and its results should stand.

Critics warn that cancelling results sets a dangerous precedent and signals unconstitutional interference. They argue independence means control by members, not political authority. The community calls for recognition of the June election, an end to interference, and respect for the rule of law.
