    • Airtel’s SEA-ME-WE 6 cable will provide 220 Terabit per second (TBPs) of global capacity.
    • The cable landing in Chennai marks a significant step in enhancing global connectivity between India, Southeast Asia, and Europe.

What happened: Airtel expands global connectivity with SEA-ME-WE 6 subsea cable

Airtel has successfully landed the SEA-ME-WE 6 (Southeast Asia-Middle East-West Europe-6) subsea cable in Chennai, a major milestone in expanding its international network. The proposed 21,700 km-long optical fibre submarine cable will connect India to Singapore and Marseille, France, significantly enhancing India’s connectivity to critical regions in Southeast Asia, the Middle East, and Western Europe. The cable, which was already landed in Mumbai on December 30, 2024, is expected to become operational by 2026.

This landing in Chennai complements Airtel’s growing network infrastructure and is a key investment in the company’s global strategy. SEA-ME-WE 6 will offer an impressive capacity of 220 Terabits per second (TBPs) of bandwidth, making it a vital addition to Airtel’s international connectivity offerings. The company has also invested in four Fiber Pairs linking Chennai, Mumbai, and Singapore, co-building a private network for high-speed connectivity across these critical regions.

The subsea cable infrastructure will be fully integrated with Airtel’s data centre arm, Nxtra by Airtel, which operates large facilities in Chennai and Mumbai. This integration will ensure seamless access to international connectivity and data centre services for businesses and global hyperscalers. Airtel’s continuous focus on enhancing global infrastructure promises to bring world-class connectivity to Indian enterprises, facilitating their expansion into international markets.

    Why it’s important

The SEA-ME-WE 6 subsea cable represents a transformative development for India’s digital infrastructure. By linking India to two major global connectivity hubs—Singapore and France—it will improve internet speeds, provide more reliable data transfer, and support the growing demand for high-capacity networks.

For global hyperscalers and businesses in India, this means seamless access to international data centre services and an enhanced ability to scale their operations. The investment is also strategic for Airtel as it strengthens its foothold in the global network space.

This cable will bolster Airtel’s position among key players like Google, Amazon, and Microsoft, who are increasingly looking for faster, more secure connections for their digital services.

In addition, the cable will be critical for industries like cloud computing, e-commerce, and content streaming, all of which rely on high-speed, low-latency data transfer across borders. With Airtel’s proven track record in submarine cable investments, SEA-ME-WE 6 will be another step towards improving global digital services and boosting India’s position in the global digital economy.
