What happened: Arelion plans new data centre in Rome
Aruba S.p.A and Arelion announced on Monday(December 9) that they are plans to activate a new Point-of-Presence (PoP) at Aruba’s Hyper Cloud Data Center (IT4) in Rome. Arelion’s new PoP, planned to go live in Q1 2025, will offer high-capacity IP transit and ethernet solutions to service providers in the region, supporting the rapid growth of Italy’s data center market.
This expansion strengthens Arelion’s network in Southern Europe, offering high-capacity services, including IP Transit, Ethernet, and wavelength solutions. Located strategically near Rome, IT4 is part of Aruba’s interconnected data centers across Italy and uses 100% renewable energy for operations. This partnership is motivated by increasing digital demand in Italy and nearby regions.
This will be Arelion’s second PoP in Rome, expanding its network in Italy to meet the increasing demand for resilient tier-1 connectivity and low-latency service delivery. Italy’s tech ecosystem continues to flourish, with Rome securing the country’s second-largest share of venture capital investments (11%), with a strong focus on fintech. Presence in Aruba’s IT4 campus in Rome, therefore, will enable Arelion to meet customer demands for scalable space and power, essential for the growth of cloud and applications such as artificial intelligence (AI) and machine learning (ML).

What it’s important
Arelion’s collaboration with Aruba’s IT4 data center highlights a pivotal shift in the telecommunications industry: the intersection of sustainability and advanced connectivity. Globally, data centers account for around 1% of total electricity consumption, prompting a move toward renewable energy solutions like those employed at IT4. Aruba’s data centers, powered by 100% green energy, represent a growing trend among providers to balance performance with environmental responsibility. This partnership demonstrates how sustainability can coexist with digital innovation, setting an example for the industry.
For smaller companies, access to reliable, eco-friendly connectivity can be transformative. Take the Italian startup GreenData, for instance, which uses sustainable data centers to offer carbon-neutral hosting services. Partnerships like Arelion’s not only support such enterprises but also create a ripple effect, encouraging more businesses to adopt greener technologies. Moreover, with IT4’s disaster recovery and high-capacity services, smaller firms can compete on a global scale without heavy upfront infrastructure investment.
By leveraging IT4’s green infrastructure, Arelion not only enhances its service portfolio but also aligns with the environmental priorities of enterprises and governments. This focus on sustainability and connectivity makes the story relevant to a global audience, showcasing how large providers can drive meaningful change through strategic partnerships
