What happened
OpenAI announced on Thursday that it now has over 1 million paying users across its business products, including ChatGPT Enterprise, Team, and Edu. The strong adoption of its chatbot is attributed to the advanced capabilities of its large language model.
The figure marks a significant increase from the 600,000 users reported in April, highlighting the success of CEO Sam Altman‘s efforts to encourage enterprises to integrate ChatGPT into their corporate operations. This growth reflects the expanding adoption of ChatGPT’s advanced capabilities in the business sector.
In a separate development, the Information reported on Thursday that OpenAI executives are considering introducing higher-priced subscription tiers for their forthcoming large-language models. These models include “Strawberry,” which is designed for advanced reasoning tasks, and a new flagship model named “Orion.”
ChatGPT Plus, which provides enhanced features and access, is priced at $20 per month. Meanwhile, the free tier of ChatGPT remains widely popular, serving hundreds of millions of users each month.

Why it’s important
OpenAI, supported by Microsoft (MSFT.O), is developing a new model called “Strawberry” with the goal of enhancing AI’s ability to perform deep research and advanced reasoning tasks.
OpenAI launched ChatGPT Enterprise a year ago, adding advanced features and privacy measures to attract corporate clients and counterbalance the substantial costs associated with developing AI technologies. It introduced ChatGPT Team in January to cater to smaller businesses. Despite a notable rise in paid corporate users this year, the specifics on how many new businesses have joined remain unclear. For instance, universities might subscribe for a larger number of accounts compared to smaller startups. OpenAI did not disclose the average number of paid users per corporate customer.
Currently, nearly half of OpenAI’s corporate users are based in the US. Internationally, Germany, Japan, and the United Kingdom are the top countries where business users are adopting the chatbot.
