    • Kim Jong Un emphasises the integration of AI in developing “suicide drones” for military use.
    • He also oversees the national “20×10” project aimed at constructing modern facilities to boost the economy and living standards.

    OUR TAKE
North Korea’s focus on advancing military technology while simultaneously pursuing economic development is a significant strategy. This dual approach may enhance national pride and security but raises concerns for regional stability, particularly for South Korea, which must remain vigilant against evolving threats.

    What happened

North Korean leader Kim Jong-un recently inspected new “suicide drones” and stressed the incorporation of artificial intelligence in the development of drones, according to North Korean state media.

During his visit to the Banxian Air Force Base, he urged the production of small drones for striking enemy targets, including nuclear capabilities. Photos showed Kim observing drone tests and claiming to have successfully identified the target and carried out a strike.

In addition, he inspected new light industrial factories and ordered a new large-scale construction project across the country to build “modern hospitals, science and technology learning centers, and grain management stations” in every city and county.

This is part of the country’s “20×10” project aimed at promoting economic development. Kim Jong-un stressed the importance of building modern hospitals and educational facilities to improve the living standards of people across the country.

    Why it’s important

This news reveals North Korea’s advancement in military technology, particularly the development of artificial intelligence drones. It highlights potential regional security issues, especially for South Korea, which is actively preparing to defend against such threats.

The emphasis on economic projects alongside military developments demonstrates North Korea’s dual focus on modernisation and militarisation, reflecting Kim Jong-un’s strategy to enhance national pride while meeting domestic needs. He stated that it is necessary to “establish science and technology learning centers in every city and county to spread the knowledge needed in various fields” in order to “urbanise the countryside” and make rural people more “progressive and proficient in technology.”

These news highlights the ongoing tensions over North Korea and further raise questions about the impact of North Korea’s technological advancement on global security dynamics.
