    OUR TAKE
Microsoft’s move to remove ads from Skype and introduce AI features aims to revitalise the app and enhance user experience. By eliminating distractions and integrating advanced tools, Microsoft seeks to attract more users and improve engagement with Skype. This update underscores Microsoft’s commitment to evolving Skype and maintaining its relevance in a competitive communications landscape.

    What happened

Microsoft has announced significant changes to Skype in its latest preview release, Skype Insider build 8.125. One of the major updates is the removal of all advertisements from the app, with Microsoft declaring that “Skype is now ad-free!” This change is intended to enhance the user experience by eliminating ads from Skype Channels and other areas of the platform. However, as this update is still in testing, there is no guarantee it will be implemented universally.

In addition to ad removal, the update introduces an improved AI image creator for Skype’s desktop apps. Users can now generate images directly within their chat windows or from the top bar of the interface, with the option to expand these AI-generated images with a single click. The update also includes the integration of OneAuth into Skype for iOS, allowing users to streamline the sign-in process by automatically logging in if they are already signed into another Microsoft app.

    Why it’s important

The decision to remove ads from Skype reflects Microsoft’s effort to improve user experience and potentially increase the app’s popularity. By eliminating advertisements, Microsoft aims to create a more streamlined and enjoyable interface, which could attract users who find ads distracting or disruptive.

The introduction of AI image creation tools represents an attempt to modernise Skype and add functionality that aligns with current digital trends. Although AI image generators may seem like an added feature, they could enhance user engagement by offering new ways to interact within the app.

The integration of OneAuth simplifies the sign-in process, improving accessibility and convenience for users, especially those already using other Microsoft products. This move could contribute to a smoother and more integrated experience across Microsoft’s ecosystem. These updates highlight Microsoft’s commitment to evolving Skype and adapting it to meet modern user needs and expectations.
