What happened

Airtable, a company that provides a collaborative platform for organising and managing data, has completed the acquisition of Dopt, a startup that focuses on helping startups and other companies create effective product onboarding experiences for new users. Dopt’s expertise in integrating AI-based assistance tools into services is a key factor in Airtable’s decision to acquire the company. The acquisition is finalised at the end of last month, and Dopt will cease its independent operations on August 15. Following the acquisition, Dopt’s team will be integrated into Airtable’s AI group, contributing to the development of new AI features and enhancements to the user experience.

The acquisition of Dopt aligns with Airtable’s strategic direction towards AI, as articulated by co-founder and CEO Howie Liu. Airtable, which experienced rapid growth during the early phase of the Covid-19 pandemic, has since seen a slowdown, like many other startups. However, Liu emphasises that the company has continued to grow. The acquisition of Dopt is seen as a strategic move to bring in talent and expertise that will help Airtable to innovate and offer more intuitive AI-powered tools to its users. Airtable’s recent launch of Airtable Cobuilder, which allows users to create apps through a chat interface similar to Copilot, is an example of the company’s commitment to making software creation more accessible.

By bringing Dopt’s expertise in AI-based onboarding and intuitive design into the fold, Airtable aims to offer more sophisticated and user-friendly tools. The strategic purchase of Dopt also reflects Airtable’s recognition of the growing importance of AI in shaping the future of software development and user engagement. This move not only bolsters Airtable’s competitive edge but also positions it as a leader in leveraging AI to simplify complex tasks, potentially attracting a broader user base and fostering innovation within the tech industry.
