    • Apple has joined the Biden-Harris Administration’s voluntary artificial intelligence (AI) safety commitments to ensure responsible AI development and mitigate risks.
    • By enlisting major tech companies like Apple, the US administration is addressing the ethical and security challenges of AI.

    OUR TAKE
Apple signed onto Biden’s AI safety commitments, becoming another major tech giant to join this initiative after Google and Microsoft. Apple’s participation was expected to strengthen the management of AI risks, encourage more companies to adopt responsible AI development practices, and boost public trust and acceptance of AI technologies.

    What happened

Apple has signed onto the Biden-Harris Administration’s voluntary AI safety commitments, joining 15 other major tech companies like Google and Microsoft. further establishing them as key to responsible AI innovation.

Nine months ago, President Biden issued a landmark Executive Order aimed at leading the U.S. in effectively managing and capitalising on AI. This order built upon voluntary commitments from 15 top U.S. AI companies secured last year with Vice President Harris’s support.

The executive order “built on voluntary commitments” was supported by 15 leading AI companies last year.

After signing the October executive order on AI, in April Biden announced further steps taken to regulate AI use to protect safety and worker’s rights.

The actions represented some of the strongest government guardrails to date on machine-learning technology, the White House said at the time.

Biden has urged tech companies to voluntarily commit to a responsible approach to artificial intelligence development.

    Why it’s important

The White House is working to mobilize the government “to ensure that America leads the way in seizing the promise and managing the risks of artificial intelligence,” according to the White House.

This initiative aims to ensure that AI technology is developed and used responsibly, addressing risks related to safety, security, and ethical concerns.

Apple’s participation enhances the credibility and visibility of the administration’s AI safety commitments, as it brings a major industry player into the fold. This endorsement could encourage other tech companies to join the initiative, thereby accelerating the adoption of responsible AI practices across the sector.

Additionally, Apple’s engagement is likely to strengthen public trust in AI. As a leading tech company known for its influential role in the industry, Apple’s support for responsible AI practices can reassure consumers and stakeholders that AI technologies are being developed with careful consideration of safety and ethics.
