    • With private 5G networks, individuals or companies can set up their own cellular connections, providing a viable alternative to Wi-Fi.
    • In high-load networks, private 5G networks have connections that are 10 times faster than Wi-Fi.

    OUR TAKE
Vodafone’s launch of LimeNET Micro 2.0 and the adoption of 5G-based MPN by European smes is important in facilitating the digital transformation of smes, enhancing network security and flexibility, enhancing the user experience and driving technological innovation.

    What happened

Vodafone debuts a Raspberry Pi-based 5G in-box network prototype at MWC 2023, and unveils an improved version of LimeNET Micro 2.0 at this year’s MWC, hoping to make 5G-based mobile private networks (MPNS) more accessible to Europe’s 22 million smes.

The LimeNET Micro 2.0 Developer Edition, produced by Vodafone in partnership with Lime Microsystems, is a crowdfunded series of private 5G base station kits that are currently on sale through Crowd Supply, with prices ranging from $800 to $12,000.

In high-load networks, private 5G networks offer connections up to 10 times faster than Wi-Fi, with security and mobility benefits. Santiago Tenorio, director of network architecture at Vodafone, shows an example of how the technology could be used in a bakery. “You don’t need a password or talk to staff, you just walk into the bakery and you’re connected to the bakery network.”

Ibrahim Bushehri, CEO and founder of Lime Networks, says: “The solution must be ultra-portable and come with an optional battery pack that can be installed on drones and autonomous robots for long-range and tactical deployment. Such as emergency response scenarios and temporary events.”

    Why it’s important

The solution provides smes with a cost-effective, easy-to-use access to 5G networks, helping to drive their digital transformation. By establishing their own MPN, smes can optimize their operations, increase productivity, and enhance customer service capabilities.

Compared to public Wi-Fi, private 5G networks have higher security. For smes, this means that their sensitive data and information can be better protected, reducing the risk of being hacked or a data breach.

MPN can not only be used in a fixed location, but can also be deployed with the mobile needs of the enterprise. Ibrahim Bushri mentioned the possibility of installing base stations on drones and autonomous robots, providing great convenience for emergency response, temporary events and other scenarios.
