    Malaysia’s Revolutionary ‘Biodome’ elevates STEAM education

    • The University of Nottingham Malaysia (UNM) wraps up another successful STEAM Carnival, praised for bringing together budding innovators and industry leaders in a celebration of interdisciplinary creativity.
    • The carnival showcased a plethora of workshops, activities, and exhibitions encompassing science, technology, engineering, arts, and mathematics (STEAM).
    • The highlight of the event was undoubtedly the “Interactive BioDome”, a collaborative eco-exhibition developed by FOSE in partnership with students from the Tenby international school Setia EcoHill.
    • The STEAM Carnival featured interactive workshops and activity booths from the faculty of science and engineering and the faculty of arts and social sciences, along with partners MDEC and CelcomDigi.
    • Professor Sam Kingman emphasised UNM’s commitment to preparing students for the ever-changing workforce, stating that STEAM education fosters creativity, critical thinking, and interdisciplinary connections.

    The University of Nottingham Malaysia (UNM) recently concluded its STEAM Carnival, a resounding success that brought together over 700 students from 18 schools to celebrate innovation and interdisciplinary learning.

    Led by Professor Sam Kingman, UNM’s Interim Provost and CEO and joined by notable figures from MDEC and CelcomDigi, the event showcased workshops, activities, and exhibitions spanning science, technology, engineering, arts, and mathematics (STEAM).

    Interactive exhibit fosters hands-on learning and environmental awareness

    However, the highlight of the event was undoubtedly the “Interactive BioDome”, a collaborative eco-exhibition developed by the faculty of science and engineering (FOSE) in partnership with students from the Tenby international school Setia EcoHill.

    These students, enrolled in UNM’s STEAM ambassador programme, are groomed to excel in STEAM disciplines, offering them an enriching educational journey, promoting environmental awareness, and showcasing innovative approaches to sustainability education.

    Through cutting-edge technologies like sensors and microcontrollers, BioDome’s talking plants project allowed plants to interact with visitors, offering insights into their well-being and showcasing the fusion of natural sciences and digital technology.

    Industry partners highlight real-world STEAM applications

    The STEAM Carnival also featured participation from esteemed partners Malaysia Digital Economy Corporation (MDEC) and CelcomDigi.

    MDEC organised coding and drone technology activities in collaboration with Elvira Systems and Aiszzy Electronics, providing students with hands-on experience in coding challenges and drone operation, thereby highlighting the practical applications and exciting prospects of aerial technology and computer science.

    Meanwhile, CelcomDigi showcased rydeEV’s electric bikes, particularly beneficial for students seeking cost-effective transportation solutions, while also championing EV adoption and green energy initiatives in the country.

    Students can now lease a rydeEV e-bike through CelcomDigi’s postpaid 5G plans with the Easy360 instalment plan, starting from as low as RM10 a day.

    “Through the STEAM Carnival, we aim to provide an immersive and inclusive learning experience, nurturing the talents of tomorrow and preparing them for the future,” he added.
