2015 Apple Watches Tagged “Obsolete”, Including the 17k Hermes Version

According to an internal memo obtained by MacRumors, all first-generation Apple Watches released by Apple in 2015 have been added to the “obsolete products” list as of September 30.

The original Apple Watches (widely referred to as Series 0) never updated beyond watchOS 4.3.2 in 2018. It means the end of hardware support: the company will no longer provide parts, repairs, or replacement services.

18-Karat Gold Watch No Longer Supported

These outdated models include the Apple Watch Edition and the Hermes version, which cost as much as $17,000 in the United States. The custom gold Watch, with an 18-karat gold case, was discontinued in 2016 and replaced by the ceramic Apple Watch Edition, which was priced at a more affordable $1,299.

In addition to this, all other 38mm and 42mm aluminum/stainless steel versions of the original Apple Watch have been classified as obsolete.

The Solid Gold Apple Watch Edition is a passion project of former Apple chief designer Jony Ive. Some Apple leaders wanted to position the Watch as “an extension” of the iPhone, while Mr. Ive saw it as a fashion accessory.

When it was launched, it appeared on the wrists of many influential celebrities, including German fashion designer Karl Lagerfeld, who, like Beyonce, wore it with a gold chain bracelet that had never been shown to the public.

    Timely but Not Timeless

Back when Apple Watch first set foot in the luxury market, the Swiss watch industry had a pessimistic attitude toward Apple’s approach. Jean-Claude Biver, then head of LVMH’s watch business, also said the best Swiss watches are unique and can be passed on from generation to generation without becoming worthless after five years. But the Apple Watch is different. It is bound to become obsolete one day.Looking back now, it was true. Apple Watch is a smart device, it has always faced the problem of death, and there will eventually be a moment of elimination.
