Amazon eyes smartphone return a decade after Fire Phone failure

  • Amazon is planning a potential smartphone comeback more than ten years after its Fire Phone flop.
  • The move is expected to centre on AI features and deeper integration with Amazon’s services ecosystem.

What happened

Second attempt after a costly misstep

Amazon is preparing a return to the smartphone market, more than a decade after the commercial failure of its Fire Phone, according to a Reuters report. The company, founded by Jeff Bezos, is exploring a new device that would place artificial intelligence at its core.

The Fire Phone, launched in 2014, was widely seen as a misstep due to its high price, limited app ecosystem, and lack of differentiation from rivals such as Apple and Samsung. The project led to a $170 million write-down and marked Amazon’s retreat from hardware-led smartphone ambitions.

Now, according to Reuters, Amazon is reconsidering the category with a different strategy—leveraging advances in generative AI and its existing ecosystem of services, including Alexa, Prime, and cloud infrastructure.

The new device is still in early development stages, and details remain limited. However, sources cited by Reuters suggest the company is focused on creating a more intelligent, assistant-driven experience rather than competing purely on hardware specifications.

Why it’s important

Amazon’s renewed interest in smartphones reflects a broader shift in the tech industry, where AI is redefining user interfaces and device value. By embedding advanced AI capabilities, Amazon could position its handset as a gateway to its services ecosystem rather than a standalone product.

From a financial perspective, the move signals Amazon’s willingness to re-enter hardware markets if it can drive higher-margin services revenue. A successful device could deepen customer engagement across e-commerce, entertainment, and cloud offerings.

The timing is also notable. As competitors integrate AI into smartphones—particularly in the US and Asia—Amazon risks being left behind if it does not establish a foothold in the primary consumer device market.

However, the company faces significant challenges, including entrenched competition and the lingering reputation of the Fire Phone failure. Success will depend on whether Amazon can deliver meaningful differentiation through AI rather than repeating past hardware-centric strategies.
