Deutsche Telekom taps Akamai for API cybersecurity

  • Deutsche Telekom Security will use Akamai’s Security Certified Service Provider programme to deliver end-to-end API protection and monitoring.
  • Services include proactive incident management, audits, compliance and support for Guardicore segmentation on sovereign cloud environments.

What happened: Deutsche Telekom has teamed up with Akamai to strengthen API cybersecurity services

Deutsche Telekom Security has begun offering new cybersecurity services in collaboration with Akamai under the latter’s Security Certified Service Provider programme, aiming to bolster API security and microsegmentation support for enterprise customers. The expanded offering delivers proactive “Day-2 operations”, which encompass continuous end-to-end management of an organisation’s API security lifecycle, including hybrid deployments, quarterly business reviews, API audits and compliance, security incident management and proactive API testing.

In addition to API protection, Deutsche Telekom Security is extending its support to Akamai Guardicore Segmentation environments, providing specialised services such as segmentation administration, incident management and compliance audits. These services are deployable on sovereign cloud environments to help regulated organisations maintain data sovereignty and meet stringent regulatory requirements.

The move comes as demand for robust API security and microsegmentation solutions surges in response to a dramatic rise in API attacks. According to a 2025 Akamai State of the Internet report, recorded API attacks surged to 150 billion between January 2023 and December 2024, underscoring the importance of comprehensive protection against threats that can lead to data breaches, financial losses and reputational harm.

Why it’s important

The partnership between Deutsche Telekom Security and Akamai reflects a growing industry focus on managed cybersecurity services that go beyond traditional perimeter defences to protect modern enterprise applications. APIs have become critical to digital business operations, linking services and data across hybrid and multi-cloud environments, but they also present significant attack surfaces if not properly secured.

By leveraging Akamai’s certified capabilities, Deutsche Telekom Security can offer more sophisticated and proactive services — including ongoing monitoring and compliance support — which are increasingly demanded by highly regulated sectors such as finance, insurance, critical infrastructure and the public sector. This shift also positions Deutsche Telekom to monetise its existing enterprise footprint by offering recurring, high-value security services rather than relying solely on traditional connectivity revenue.

In a broader context, the deal exemplifies how telecommunications companies are expanding into comprehensive cybersecurity solutions as digital transformation accelerates and threat actors become more sophisticated, making API security and microsegmentation essential components of modern defence strategies.
