- Virgin Media O2 has activated its next-generation 5G Standalone network in Essex, offering improved speeds, coverage and reliability for customers.
- The rollout forms part of a £700 million mobile transformation plan to expand advanced 5G infrastructure across the UK.
What happened: O2 turns on advanced 5G standalone network for Essex
Virgin Media O2 has switched on its latest 5G Standalone (SA) network across multiple towns in Essex, bringing faster and more reliable mobile connectivity to the county’s population of around 1.5 million. The new infrastructure is live in areas including Colchester, Chelmsford, Loughton and Billericay, and delivers at least 90 per cent outdoor coverage in each town where it has launched.
The rollout uses next-generation 5G technology that does not rely on older 4G systems. Unlike earlier non-standalone 5G, this network runs on a dedicated 5G core and radio access, enabling lower latency, higher reliability and greater capacity for data-intensive tasks. Customers with compatible devices can access the upgraded network at no extra cost.
O2 said the rollout is part of its broader Mobile Transformation Plan, under which the operator is investing about £700 million this year to upgrade both 4G and 5G infrastructure nationwide. The programme also includes deployment of small cells to boost capacity in urban locations and targeted improvements in areas such as railway lines, airports and major roads.
Local officials welcomed the enhanced coverage. They said it will benefit everyday activities such as remote working, online education and video communications, as well as support local businesses that depend on dependable mobile connectivity.

Why it’s important
The activation of 5G Standalone in Essex reflects a wider shift in UK mobile networks toward fully native 5G infrastructure, which removes the dependency on legacy 4G technology. Standalone networks can deliver more consistent performance and support advanced applications such as smart transport, connected healthcare and immersive digital services.
For residents and businesses, the upgraded network may translate into smoother streaming, faster downloads and improved responsiveness in crowded areas. It also positions Essex to benefit from future innovations that demand high bandwidth and low delay.
From an industry perspective, O2’s investment signals confidence in the long-term value of 5G standalone as a foundation for next-generation services. As mobile usage patterns evolve and data demand grows, operators that expand true 5G coverage may gain competitive advantage while supporting broader digital transformation goals.
